Mid Century Modern Kitchen Remodel
This Mid Century Modern style gem was in need of a face lift. The kitchen functioned well, but the finishes were worn and our client required more functional storage. Having already completed several smaller projects to update the bathrooms and paint colors, our homeowner enlisted our help to modernize and re-style his open concept kitchen and dining room.
The renovation goals for this central Phoenix home included:
- Update the finishes: cabinets, counters, backsplash, hardware and appliances
- Design functional storage solutions
- Install additional cabinets utilizing the wall space in the dining room
- Increase the amount of lighting options
Our design phase was very straight forward. The flow of the work triangle was in great shape for a single homeowner or a family of five. Our focus was on updated finishes and functional storage options .
As a distributor for Mid Continent Cabinetry, our go to door style for this modern contemporary kitchen was Rohe, this simple slab wood door covers a multitude of design styles when stained or painted in different wood species and then paired with a wide range of cabinet moldings. The square cabinet edge molding was our perfect answer for accentuating the modern lines and enhancing the contemporary style of the door as crown molding and light rail.
For the counter this Lagos Azul quartz selection is the perfect complement to the existing stained concrete floors. Linear mosaic glass tiles bring attention to the backsplash drawing your eye past the small appliances, appropriately placed on the counter. The stainless bar pull cabinet hardware brings all the metal finishes together with the new ventilation hood, upgraded gas slide-in range, french-door refrigerator with bottom freezer and sleek dishwasher with concealed control panel. The wood dining table and chairs along with the moveable island with butcher block top keep the warm wood tones of the Mid Century Modern style.
To add functional storage to the cabinet layout we made sure to utilize a corner easy reach cabinet where before there was only dead space. The large deep pot drawers to the left and right of the stove hold all the cookware and serve ware within close proximity. The additional cabinets installed in the dining area of this open floor plan kitchen were purposefully designed at 18″ deep for the tall and base cabinets so as not to encroach on the walkway. Inside the tall pantry cabinets, deep wood roll-out trays help keep everything organized and easily accessible. The additional counter space provided the perfect location for a small television and the microwave. This microwave is in the perfect location for how this space plan functions for our homeowner, as it does not consume any counter prep space near the stove or sink.
This kitchen has an abundance of natural lighting during our sunny days, but was lacking in task and ambient lighting in the evening. The new lighting plan includes four recessed can lights over the main kitchen area and one can light over by the new dining area cabinets. At all the wall cabinets, undercabinet lighting was installed to illuminate the counters for tasks. A new modern industrial style pendant light over the sink provides ample task light. In the center of the open floor plan, the new modern fan with light circulates the air and continues the style and finishes the homeowner so desired to complete the perfect face lift.
This beautifully simple kitchen now exudes all the modern design elements our client hoped for in this new kitchen. Clean lines, warm wood tones, industrial stainless steel finishes and warm gray color tones work together to create this Mid Century Modern kitchen design. For our homeowner, he could not be happier with how the space looks and feels now; transformation complete.
