Considering a Bathroom Remodel? Think Carefully about the Layout.

Building a new home or planning a bathroom remodel can be very exciting in terms of bathroom design and layout. All of the excitement can also be replaced with an overwhelming sense of frustration when you realize your ideal bathroom isn’t coming together just right. The bathroom layout and design is an extremely important factor when you’re remodeling or designing a bathroom for your new home. Let’s look at several layout considerations to keep in mind while you’re planning.

Questions to Consider

  • How many people will use this particular bathroom? The master bath is generally used by one or two people. Additional bathrooms may be used by any number of people depending on the size of your family.
  • How will the newly remodeled bathroom be used? The master bath is often where the homeowner(s) prepare for work and other events, so do you need a makeup mirror? A linen closet? Dual shower setup?
  • How much privacy do you need? Some couples are fine dealing with all bathroom needs without privacy where others prefer privacy at the toilet or in the tub. Decide how much privacy will be needed in your new bathroom.
  • Where will things go? We’ll touch on this more in a later section as part of the layouts.

Bathroom Layouts

Most bathrooms fit into one of four categories – half-bath, three-quarter bath, full bath, and luxury bath. The half bath includes a toilet and a sink for washing hands. The three-quarter bath usually includes a toilet, sink, and shower stall with no tub. The full bath has a toilet, sink, shower, and tub. And the luxury bath has all the bells and whistles required to be truly elegant and luxurious.

Common Guidelines to Consider for your bathroom remodel:

  • Entry Door – The door should be 34 inches wide at minimum. The bigger and more ornate the door, the more luxurious the bathroom will appear.
  • Door Interference – No fixture, door, or drawer should block the entry door. Make sure the door can be opened even with cabinet doors and drawers open.
  • Floor Space – Open floor space is extremely important when you’re building the bathroom. More floor space makes the bathroom feel large and luxurious even if actual square footage is limited.
  • Shower Size – The average shower stall is 36×36 inches with a door that swings out. Make sure there is plenty of space for the door to swing open without hitting another piece of furniture. Larger and more complex showers with options for steam and music are wonderful for a luxury bathroom.
  • Bathtub Dilemma – Many homeowners moved away from installing a bathtub in lieu of a standalone shower in the 1990s and early 2000s. We’re seeing a lot more homeowners request space for a large tub in today’s bathroom designs.
  • The Toilet – You may think a toilet is just a toilet, but once you really start looking into designs and options, you will discover that you have quite the decision to make. Choose a nice toilet with added functionality for a more luxurious bathroom.
  • Storage – Everyone needs a good amount of storage in the bathroom. Decide how much storage you need early and make sure to discuss this with us before we begin the planning process. We want to make absolutely sure that you have the storage you need in the bathroom you deserve.

Exquisite Bathroom Design Elements

The average bathroom is roughly 40 square feet or 5 x 8 feet. This is plenty of space for a shower and tub combo, toilet, and sink with vanity. But we aren’t here to talk about the average bathroom today; we’re going to talk about the important elements of exquisite, luxurious bathroom design. You may even consider this the ultimate guide for designing your dream bathroom if you wish. Are you ready? Let’s get started!

  1. Floor Space – Floor space can be used strategically to create the illusion of a larger bathroom in a small space or to give you plenty of separation in a very large space. A large bathroom will automatically feel more luxurious than a small bathroom, but floor space isn’t the end.
  2. Amazing View – Every luxurious bathroom needs an amazing view. Your view could be the landscaping in your backyard or the scenery in the distance, but large windows create a sense of luxury.
  3. Quality Materials – Never settle for cheap materials that will need to be replaced repeatedly when you’re designing a luxury bathroom. The materials you choose will reflect the quality of the bathroom, so choose wisely and choose quality.
  4. Multiple Textures – Use furnishings and decor with a variety of textures and designs. A solid marble bathroom would be amazing, but consider breaking it up a bit with copper, glass, and stone.
  5. Sumptuous Finishes – The perfect shiny finishes will make a big difference in the appearance of the bathroom. Choose finishes that reflect light and direct it in angles that are sure to be amazing.
  6. Elaborate Details – Ornately finished mirrors, decorative window treatments, and elegant lighting will help polish up the luxurious appeal.
  7. Decorative Artwork – Artwork creates a beautiful and sophisticated appeal in the bathroom. Use large pieces of artwork as an accent wall or to bring attention to a specific area of the room.
  8. Elegant Lighting – Make the most of your bathroom lighting options by highlighting the areas you love the most. Shine a spotlight on the artwork; add large candlesticks around the freestanding tub, install large windows and LED recessed lighting for ambient and natural lighting options.

Historic Spanish Colonial Kitchen Remodel

Original Kitchen Spanish Colonial Kitchen Remodel in Phoenix

This historic home built in Phoenix’s Willo District has had many remodels over the years that have strayed from the original Spanish Colonial style. In a previous remodel the kitchen had been enlarged and outfitted with high-quality cabinets. The homeowners wanted to restore their homes historic Spanish Colonial style while keeping most of the original cabinetry.

The original tile was replaced with handmade Mexican tile to fit the Spanish Colonial style of the home.  The historic style tile is one and a half inch thick, made of concrete and has a unique marble finish – creating the color and pattern.

Peninsula Cabinets

The homeowners wanted to create a more practical space out of the existing peninsula cabinets.  We lowered the new peninsula cabinet to table height and fit the mechanics of the downdraft cooktop without losing all of the space inside for storage.
