Kitchen Remodeling…
Cramped vs Open Kitchen Floor plans
When people think of older homes in the metro Phoenix area, the first thing they might think of would be a small out of date kitchen. It’s true the valley has it’s share of small cramped kitchens with cabinets that were cheap in their day and showing their age in unsightly ways. The photos below illustrate how remodeling your kitchen can bring new life into the heart of your home.
Kitchen remodeling today can take your small kitchen and expand it by opening up walls to the adjoining spaces to create more of an open concept feeling.
You will find that by remodeling your floor plan in this way will create a kitchen that will be great for cooking and entertaining. Many of our clients are amazed at the difference in how they feel about their home when they don’t feel isolated while they prepare food for family and friends.
A kitchen with a more open floor plan will accommodate when company is over, and everyone finds themselves in the kitchen. When you have an open kitchen floor plan your family and guests will be able to visit, while not being crammed into a small unworkable kitchen.
Many of our kitchen remodels have had kitchens that were so small we couldn’t even take a good before picture. If your home has a cramped kitchen like some of these did before their expansion, let us show you how your kitchen can be transformed.
If you live in Phoenix AZ or the surrounding communities of Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, Ahwatukee, Gilbert, Glendale and Mesa Arizona we would love to be of service.
This dated 50′sranch home kitchen is a great example of how creating an open kitchen floor plan can change how your home feels and how your family can use the new open kitchen.
Our Before kitchen is like so many galley kitchens in the valley. It is cut off from the adjoining rooms and lacks the warmth that an open floor plan can offer to your family. Galley kitchens were originally popular by builders in the 50′s due to their efficient use of space in a floor plan that featured rooms that were separated rather than focused on function.
Our After kitchen has lost the galley kitchen confined feel and now welcomes both family and friends. The new kitchen island offers a great space in this open kitchen for a casual meal or socializing during holiday meal preparation.
This kitchen illustrates what can be done to create an open kitchen floor plan by removing walls that separate the kitchen from the adjoining rooms. This kitchen didn’t suffer from the galley kitchen limitations, but it still suffered from being separated from the other family rooms.
Before the remodel of this kitchen, there was a large, deeply set bay window that occupied considerable kitchen work space, a wall that closed the kitchen off from the living room, limited functionality and outdated appliances.
We made numerous modifications to the homeowners’ kitchen to accommodate their needs, such as removing a wall to open up the kitchen to the rest of the home; installing a functional new island with an abundance of storage space and seating area; installing all new contemporary cabinetry, counters, appliances, lighting, windows and fixtures; and modifying a wall on the far side of the kitchen to make it more open.
The resulting open floor plan and unique feature wall was awarded the 2007 NARI CotY award as an interior specialty feature.

This Ahwatukee home needed a total make-over to make it work for our clients. They were tired of how the kitchen felt separated from the family room, and how the low ceiling with it’s dated florescent lighting made the kitchen feel small.
Raising the ceiling and eliminating the dated lighting were the first things we took care of to open this kitchen’s feel. Doing a complete redesign of the cabinet floor plan, eliminating the peninsula and creating an island topped with a granite counter top completed the make-over creating a more open kitchen floor plan.
This is another example of updating an Ahwatukee kitchen to open the floor plan and raise the dropped ceiling to eliminate florescent lighting and open up the feel of the kitchen. You’ll notice how the use of lighter colored cabinets and natural stone flooring have created a more inviting feel to the new kitchen. By redesigning the floor plan moving the island to create a more open feel rather than the previous separate kitchen space.
This Ahwatukee kitchen had size going for it, but it still felt cut off from the living spaces surrounding it due to it’s various dropped decorator features and suspended cabinets. By eliminating the visual roadblocks and redesigning the floor plan to create more of a welcoming feel, we were able to create a totally open and welcoming kitchen floor plan.
